About This Tour
Serbia is one of Europe’s most underrated travel destinations, and its eastern reaches are the most overlooked of all. Stretching from the Danube’s dramatic southern bend down through ancient wine country and into the Roman heartland of Niš, this corner of the Balkans holds a density of history, nature, and culture that rivals anywhere on the continent. The Balkans Discovery tour is your guide through all of it — seven days across a landscape that few Western travelers have ever seen, following a route where emperors built their palaces, medieval kings raised their fortress churches, and local families have been pressing wine in underground cellars for centuries.
The tour begins in Belgrade and heads east along the Danube toward Đerdap — the Iron Gates gorge that marks the border between Serbia and Romania. This is one of the most scenically powerful stretches of river in all of Europe, and most visitors to the Balkans never see it. On Day 2, the route passes through Viminacium, the largest Roman city ever excavated in Serbia, before continuing to the medieval walls of Golubac Fortress and the extraordinary Neolithic settlement of Lepenski Vir, where sculptural finds dating back 9,000 years rewrote our understanding of prehistoric European civilization. Day 3 brings the gorge itself — a two-and-a-half-hour boat cruise through the Kazani canyon narrows, past Trajan’s Table carved into the cliffside, and through the widening waters of the Iron Gates. This is the kind of landscape that stays with you.
From the gorge, the tour turns south into Timočka Krajina — a quiet, fertile region known for its wine and its warm, unhurried pace. Day 4 moves through the natural stone bridges of Vratna Gorge before arriving at Rajačke Pimnice, a village built almost entirely of traditional wine cellars carved into a hillside. Dinner here, surrounded by barrels and candlelight with local wine flowing, is one of the defining evenings of the tour. Day 5 passes through Felix Romuliana, the UNESCO-listed imperial palace of Emperor Galerius, before heading into the mountains toward Kalna and then south to Niš. Serbia’s third city and, by some accounts, the birthplace of Constantine the Great, Niš deserves a full day of its own. Day 6 covers the city thoroughly — from the haunting Skull Tower and the dark history of Crveni Krst concentration camp to the living energy of the fortress and čaršija. The final day loops back toward Belgrade through the Resava Valley, stopping at two of Serbia’s finest medieval monastery complexes — Ravanica and Manasija — and descending into the otherworldly chambers of Resavska Cave before the long drive home.
What makes the Balkans Discovery different from a standard Balkans tour is the depth of territory it covers and the coherence of its narrative. This is not a highlights reel — it is a journey with a logic and a rhythm, one that connects ancient civilizations, natural wonders, and living culture across a part of Serbia that most travelers never find on their own. Guests leave with a genuine understanding of a country that is far more layered, generous, and surprising than they expected.
