About This Tour

Belgrade is often described through its fortresses, kings, and wars, but its true character is just as deeply shaped by underground culture, street art, forgotten neighborhoods, and constantly changing urban spaces. The Urban & Alternative Tour reveals the city beyond the postcards, focusing on creativity, subcultures, contrasts, and places where Belgrade reinvents itself again and again.

This walking tour begins in Savamala, once the heart of Belgrade’s alternative scene, and ends in Cetinjska Street, its modern-day successor. Along the way, guests explore hidden passages, murals, former industrial zones, creative hubs, and neighborhoods where history and contemporary life overlap in unexpected ways. The tour is ideal for travelers who want to understand how Belgrade lives today, and how its recent past continues to shape its identity.

The experience starts at the Geozavod Building, one of the most impressive historical buildings in the area and a symbol of old Belgrade meeting new urban projects. From here, the guide introduces the idea of contrasts: grand architecture next to street art, alternative bars facing luxury developments, and a city constantly balancing heritage and change. The story of Savamala unfolds as a former trade and transport hub, later an industrial zone, and eventually the center of Belgrade’s underground cultural revival.

Walking through Braće Krsmanović Street, guests are introduced to the everyday side of the alternative scene, with cafés, graffiti, and local stories. Stops like ‘Ben Akiba’ open discussions about humor, literary references, and Belgrade’s unique relationship with culture and irony. On the way toward the river, the tour touches on Brankov most (Branko’s Bridge), including the lesser-known story of a former club hidden inside the bridge structure itself.

At the striking La Santa de Belgrado mural, the focus shifts to street art as a form of expression, resistance, and storytelling. Guests learn how murals and graffiti have become one of the strongest visual identities of modern Belgrade. This stop also opens a conversation about Karađorđeva Street, old industrial infrastructure, freight elevators, and underground tunnels that hint at the city’s hidden layers.

Nearby murals, including playful and surreal works, further highlight the diversity of Belgrade’s street art scene.

Moving uphill, the atmosphere changes at Kosančićev Venac, one of the city’s most atmospheric historic quarters. With cobblestone streets, viewpoints, and the remains of the destroyed National Library, this area is often compared to Montmartre, offering a poetic contrast to the raw urban energy below. The walk continues through Topličin Venac, blending small parks, cafés, and cultural institutions.

Passing through Spasić Passage and hidden inner walkways, the tour reveals Belgrade’s lesser-known urban connections, including passages linking major streets like Knez Mihailova and Vasina. At Students’ Square, guests learn about the area’s long history and its role today as a meeting point of youth, education, and culture.

In Dorćol, one of Belgrade’s most dynamic neighborhoods, stories focus on multicultural heritage, local life, and contemporary creativity. Stops like Blaznavac highlight courtyards filled with murals and alternative energy, while ‘Dom Omladine’ showcases Belgrade’s long tradition of youth culture, concerts, and social movements.

The walk continues through Čumićevo Sokače, a former neglected passage turned design and creative district.

The tour concludes in Cetinjska Street, a former brewery complex transformed into Belgrade’s main nightlife and alternative hub. Standing here, guests can clearly see the journey they have taken: from the old alternative center to the new one, from forgotten spaces to reimagined urban life.

The Urban & Alternative Tour offers insight into Belgrade as a living, evolving city, shaped as much by creativity and subculture as by history. It is a walk through contrasts, stories, and spaces that define Belgrade beyond the mainstream.
